What actually makes a website convert (hint: it's not the visuals)

A beautiful homepage that nobody can navigate loses to an unglamorous one that gets out of the visitor's way. Here's what we actually optimize for.

Clients almost always ask for a website that "looks premium." Fair enough — but the sites that actually convert visitors into enquiries are rarely the most visually elaborate ones. They're the ones where the visitor never has to think about what to do next.

We start every design with the page's single job, not its layout. A pricing page's job is to answer "is this for me and what does it cost" in the first screen. A homepage's job is to route three different visitor types to three different next steps in under ten seconds. Once the job is clear, the layout, hierarchy and copy fall into place around it — not the other way around.

The details that move conversion rate rarely show up in a portfolio screenshot: form fields that ask for less, a CTA button that's the only saturated color on the page, load times under two seconds, mobile layouts designed first instead of squeezed in afterward. None of it is exciting to present, and all of it is measurable in the numbers after launch.

Good design and good conversion aren't actually in tension — a confusing page is rarely beautiful either. But when we have to choose between a flourish and a friction point, the friction point loses every time.
